Urban renewal in South Al Sharqiyah: Improving the urban environment and promoting sustainable development

Sur / Oman News Agency / The urban renewal project in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate represents a strategic step towards improving the urban environment and rehabilitating old neighborhoods and communities by re-planning neighborhoods to make them vibrant, more sustainable and attractive to residents and visitors to be in line with modern and advanced urban plans that are compatible with the regional plan for South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

Sulaiman bin Ali Al Qarni, Director General of Housing and Urban Planning in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, explained that the most important features of the national strategy for urban development in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate aim to improve and develop food processing, fishing, fish farming, aquaculture and marine tourism, and work to improve the public transportation network and establish various economic projects, focus on the tourism sector, provide tourism services and improve public places and open spaces in several stages to become more beautiful, lively and stimulating for active movement and a source of attraction for visitors, in addition to paying attention to historical archaeological areas and areas with a special marine and land nature that characterize the governorate’s wilayats.

He added that the National Urban Development Strategy adopted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning in cooperation with the relevant authorities aims to achieve more balanced development that works to enhance environmental sustainability, improve the urban environment, and achieve economic and social development, which leads to providing job opportunities in various centers based on their development potential, and thus reducing internal migration towards the main attraction centers.

He pointed out that the most important objectives of the National Urban Development Strategy for South Al Sharqiyah Governorate are to develop the city of Sur as a regional center for the governorate, as the city of Sur includes an industrial and logistical sector, a tourism sector, marine activities, and the development and provision of ferry services from Al Ashkhara to Sur Muscat, and the development of the Al Haddah, Al Daffah, Qurun and Khawima areas as major rural centers, in addition to the Niyabat of Taiwi, the Asilah area and Falaj Al Mashayekh as secondary rural centers, and the beautification of Al Hira in the Wilayat of Al Kamil and Al Wafi, and the development and improvement of agriculture, fish farming and food processing in the Wilayats of Al Kamil and Al Wafi, Jalan Bani Bu Ali, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan and the Wilayat of Masirah.

Al-Qarni stated that the rehabilitation of heritage areas and sites and work to improve the centers of the states through urban projects such as the Sur Downtown project, which stems from the master plan for the state of Sur, and the renovation of the Al Hamouda Fort area in Jalan Bani Bu Ali and the area surrounding Jalan Bani Bu Hassan Fort, aims to enhance the place-making industry and preserve the Omani urban identity.
