The branch committee The Sur branch committee, like the committees of the other branches, plays a pivotal role in the process of conveying the private sector's proposals on economic matters to the decision-making positions in the government. The private sector's views are reached through the meetings and gatherings held by the specialised committees emanating from the main committee. The regulations of the specialised committees include organisational rules covering the purpose of their establishment and the term of their mandate. These committees are the Economic Committee, the Industry Committee, the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee, the Services Committee, the Tourism Committee, the Training and Omanisation Committee, the Contracting Committee and the Foodstuffs Committee.
Economic aspects
Since the branch began operating in the region, the companies and establishments operating in the region have been in continuous increase. In view of the resources available in the region and the available factors of production, the work has concentrated on several sectors, represented in the following:
The commercial sector
The population of the South Al Sharqiyah region reached, by the end of 2004, about 177,459 people distributed over four wilayas, which made the commercial sector in continuous prosperity in view of the continuous increase in the population as well as the rise in the average individual income during recent years, since most of the companies and establishments operating in the region concentrate their business in the commercial sector.
The industrial sector

This sector is developing greatly at the present time, as several plants have recently been established in the region. Perhaps the dominant majority of this sector is small industries, where small workshops are spread across all the wilayas of the region. These workshops cover the local demand for wooden items such as furniture and doors, iron products, and aluminium products such as windows and doors, as well as brick factories and quarries. The Wilaya of Sur in the region is also famous for a very old industry, namely the building of ships and sailing boats, which were used heavily in the past in trade and fishing; but the demand for them today has greatly decreased due to their replacement by other types such as fibreglass boats. Nevertheless, some of these workshops still operate now to order, and there are also two factories in the region for making fibreglass boats.

There is also in the region the (Sur Industrial Area), an area designated for large and medium industries. The area was established in 1993 and covers a plot of land of 4 thousand hectares, with a deep-water port. Among the companies operating in the area are the Oman Liquefied Natural Gas Company, which works on liquefying and exporting natural gas, and the Oman India Fertilizer Company, which works in producing urea and ammonia fertilizer.
The tourism sector

The number of tourists coming to the region has increased noticeably during the past two years, whether those coming from outside the Sultanate or from within it, owing to the varied tourist attractions the Al Sharqiyah region enjoys. Investments in the tourism sector in the region have risen, especially a noticeable increase in the number of hotels and tourist rest-houses. The government, represented by the Ministry of Tourism, is drawing up a plan to develop the tourist attractions and increase investment in the tourism sector, where many tourist places in the region have been developed and work is under way on a number of tourist projects. The Ministry is also currently studying the establishment of a huge tourist project in the region, comprising several projects that include hotels, tourist villas, a tourist marina, shops and restaurants, in addition to varied entertainment services. Most of the tourist sites have also been connected with paved roads to facilitate tourists' access to them. The tourism sector in the region is considered a promising sector and one of the sectors on which the government relies to attract investments to the region.

The fisheries and agricultural sector

Owing to the region's overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, this sector is considered very important for the people of the region and those working in it, where 222 establishments operate in this sector, distributed between fish-marketing establishments, fish-processing, export establishments, ice-making and retail. There are also two fishing ports in the region, the first in the Wilaya of Sur and the second in the Wilaya of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali in the nyabah of Al Ashkharah; these ports have several jetties, ice factories and fuel-filling stations. Fish from the region are marketed internally or exported outside the Sultanate, and the Gulf states are among the most important destinations for Omani fish exported from the region, followed by the European Union and the Asian countries.

As for the agricultural sector, it is not of a large size in the region, owing to the scarcity of agricultural land and the shortage of irrigation water; but the areas planted with palm trees exist in all the wilayas of the region and produce dates, distributed mostly locally and externally to the Gulf states on some occasions. A number of agricultural products are also produced and marketed in the region, such as some vegetables and animal feed, as well as some seasonal products considered to have an economic return.

Other sectors

The contracting and construction sector:

This sector has witnessed active movement during the past years, owing to the large projects that the South Al Sharqiyah region has witnessed and is witnessing — beginning with the building of the gas-liquefaction plant in Sur, the fertilizer plant, and the road connecting Sur to Muscat, which is under construction; also the building of the fishing ports in both Sur and Al Ashkharah, and the Al Sharqiyah Sands water-basin project. In addition to that, the infrastructure projects that include hundreds of kilometres of roads, lighting and housing projects. All of this contributed to invigorating this sector, and through the government's future plans regarding the region and investment in the tourism and services sectors, the contracting and development sector will remain active during the coming phases.
