Sea captains
Ustad Al Mol — Sheikh Mohammed bin Khamis bin Ali Al Shaqqaq Al Oraimi
Born in the Omani city of Sur in 1870 and died in 1967. From a family that practised shipbuilding, trade and teaching in Sur. He learned the craft at the hands of skilled builders, mastered its secrets and knew its finest details, so that shipowners vied for him to build their ships. He was among the few of his kind in Sur who combined shipbuilding with seafaring. A number of master builders who later became known as distinguished craftsmen also learned the craft from him, among them:
1 = Master builder Yusuf bin Saleh Munibari.
2 = Master builder Saleh bin Hussein bin Abd Al Rahim.
Among the many famous ships he built or supervised:
1 = "Fath Al Khair", of the ghanja type, built for Nakhoda Mohammed bin Ali bin Khamis Al Qasimi.
2 = "Fath Al Khair", for Nakhoda Saleh bin Ali Al Saadi.
3 = "Al Khalidi", of the sambuk type, built for Nakhoda Abdullah bin Saleh bin Mohammed Al Mudailawi Al Farsi.
4 = "Hazza", of the boom type, built for the sons of Makomat Al Farsi; there is another boom he also built for the sons of Makomat whose name is unknown.
5 = "Barti", of the sambuk type, built for the banian Kimji Ramdas.
6 = "Al Sinma 'Atiyat Al Rahman'", of the sambuk type, built for Nakhoda Nasser bin Ali Al Hashar, then bought by Nakhoda Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed bin Juwaid Al Ghailani.
7 = "Umm Al Rakb", for Nakhoda Juma bin Ali Bahwan Al Mukhaini.
Among the stories told about him: during the Second World War he was on a sea voyage on one of the ships, among a group of merchants, aboard the ship of Nakhoda Saif bin Nasser bin Thabit Al Mukhaini named "Al Sahira". On their return to the city of Sur, at night and in rainy weather, they could not enter Khor Jarama; but the father, Mohammed bin Khamis bin Ali Al Shaqqaq Al Oraimi, with his keen insight, was able to make out the entrance of the khor by the lightning, and so — with the nakhoda's help — managed to enter and reach safety.
